or maybe not paranoid enough

In 1996, I watch Peter Gutmann present a paper about how extremely difficult it is to delete data from hard drives such that it is deleted for keepsies. I remember the discussions with Marcus and others afterwards that centered around how incredibly doomed we were, as security professionals.

It might be that time again. I sort of hope I only have one of these doomed moments once a decade.

It’s not like before, having a microphone hidden in your workplace wasn’t a problem. Now, it’s just a slightly worse problem. I don’t see that we’re substantially more doomed than we were before.

I mean, if you’re in the right place at the right time in Ottawa (and presumably any government town) you can buy pallets of not-very-old used computers with no hard drives for next to nothing, because the RCMP or CSIS or whoever has put a bolt through them and melted down the leftovers. The physical-layer stuff is a problem, but it’s not one that’s completely intractable.
